When even the thought of “knees up Mother Brown” makes your knees throb, you’ve got a problem. Try this to help sooth those ol’ knees before they get worse.
Vajrasana, done every day with a rolled up yoga mat, towel or (my personal favorite) firm swim noodle behind the knees, is effective at keeping the knee joint more open and counteracting compression. I call this vajrasana-with-noodles, the dish that might just save your knees. And it comes with a side: stretching and strengthening the ankles. For desert, delicious deep breaths – this is a perfect spot to sit still in and breathe. Whether you choose fancy breathing like pranayama, or simple long slow inhales and exhales, it’s an opportunity for a therapeutic and relaxing ‘time out’. I come from a family of arthritics – plastic knees and hips everywhere – but my knees are doing fine. Perhaps I didn’t get the gammy knee gene, but perhaps it’s because I do this almost daily. I’ll let you know which is more likely in another decade or so.
